Spay during a Heat Cycle

letterhead.JPG
Spay during estrus/pro-estrus

When an intact female shows signs of swollen vulva or even bloody discharge, she is actually undergoing the pro-estrus stage, which will then be followed with the actual estrus stage. These 2 stages are usually called “in heat” in layman’s term.  Most surgeons will not spay a female that is in heat due to a surge in certain reproductive hormones which may cause some complications during or after surgery.

In heat females are more prone to bleeding due to high level of estrogen.  The uterus is engorged with large supply of blood vessels in order to prepare for pregnancy should fertilization occur. The uterine wall is also very thickened, which can present a challenge to the surgeon. Removal of both ovaries during the spay procedure may cause an abrupt decline of certain reproductive hormones, which may lead to undesired side effects.

At All Creatures, the surgeons will spay a dog that is in-heat provided the owner understands the risk of surgery and possible complications that may follow. An extra fee will be applied to such procedure.
