Tail Docking and Dewclaw Removal

letterhead.JPG
Tail docking & Dewclaw removal

What is it and how is it done?

This is a procedure performed solely for cosmetic purposes, and upon owner’s request only. This is only performed in purebred puppies between 3 and 5 days of age. The dam and puppies will be examined by our veterinarian, and the procedure will be done without anesthesia or analgesia. Tails are docked at a certain length depending on the breed.  Dewclaws (mostly rear feet, sometimes front feet if owner requests) will also be removed and sutures are placed to oppose wounds. An injection of antimicrobial will be given to each puppy to prevent infection.  At this visit, de-wormer will also be dispensed for owner to start administering at 2, 4, and 6 weeks of age.

How do I schedule this?

You may call our office to schedule for this appointment on the day the puppies are whelped. We usually try to accommodate the patients into our schedule within 3-5 days after birth. However, surgeries are only performed Mondays through Thursdays, so special arrangements may need to be made over the weekend.
