Dr. Dan is frequently asked, “How do you tell if a snake is sick?” Well there are two windows to the inside of a snake: the mouth and the cloaca (the butt end). This is where we can see evidence of bacterial infection parasites during a snake’s exam. Most problems with reptiles are related to husbandry and correcting husbandry is a large part of keeping healthy reptiles. Improper husbandry puts reptiles under stress which creates an environment for parasites, gram-negative bacteria or other potential pathogens to take over their weakened immune system. The important thing to remember is don’t wait until it’s too late, if you think that something’s wrong with your reptile the sooner we get to examine it the better chance we have of helping it.
